Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser
Scheffau, as it's name 'leaning meadows' suggests, nestles at the foot of the mighty Wilder Kaiser (Wild Emperor) mountain range, 752m above sea level, and is a typically Tirolean village with church, fountain and traditional houses. This small village with huge opportunities for outdoor activities lies in the middle of the Wilden Kasier National Park and, as such, it's a great place to get back to nature. As one of the smaller villages in the area Scheffau retains its appeal as the farming village it still is. Tourism is a major industry but careful management means you can enjoy the local lifestyle as well as all the things you'd expect from a holiday in the Austrian Tirol.
Scheffau lies on a sunny plateau in a central position between Kitzbuhel and Kufstein, at the base of the Wilden Kaiser mountains and opposite the Kitzbuheler Alps. The scenery is quite diverse, depending on from which side of the valley you're viewing it. Fresh mountain air, a village where tradition is still very strong, sensational scenery and welcoming hosts combine to make you feel relaxed and away from it all.
Scheffau is a popular summer locale for people roundabouts with it's breathtaking HintersteinerSee lake, wooded walks, marked footpaths and mountain bike tracks all leading from the village into the hills. The 110km of marked paths are only the start of the 700km system in the area and are only the start of the activities Scheffau has to offer in the summer and autumn months.
In winter Scheffau is a well-known ski resort and a perfect gateway to Austria's largest inter-connected ski arena SkiWelt (Ski World). A well-established ski school with an award winning children's ski park, Kinder Kaiserland, await visitors of all ages. Snowboarding is also popular and with excellent lifts and pistes Scheffau offers the winter visitor a range of outdoor activities. Winter walking is also popular and the local lift pass covers the whole of SkiWelt and includes VIP entrance at the gondola, so the first challenge is where to start.
Neighbouring villages include Soll and Ellmau, better known to holidaymakers from the UK, and the excellent transport system in the area means you can easily get Scheffau's neighbours or go farther afield to St. Johann, Going, Kitzbuhel or Kufstein. Day trips to Innsbruck, Salzburg or some of the natural wonders of the region are also easily arranged.
Scheffau is an ideal place for anyone - singles, couples, families and groups - to come and unwind whilst getting active in the Alps. There's lots to do for all ages at any time of the year in this natural paradise and if you just want to relax and enjoy the mountains its' perfect for a non-active holiday too. Special activities for children can be combined into family weeks that everyone can take part in. The villagers themselves enjoy welcoming guests from all over and sharing the peace and tranquility of life as it's lived in this part of the world.
